Club Ferro Carril Oeste, better known as Ferro, is a club based in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was founded on 28 July 1904 by 96 employees of the Ferrocarril del Oeste de Buenos Aires company under the name Club Empleados de Ferro Carril Oeste de Buenos Aires. The institution's most prominent activity is football. Ferro's first team left the Primera División in 2000.
Governed at national level by the Argentine Football Association, it was one of the eighteen founding clubs of the first professional championship in 1931, in which it has played 80 seasons. It won two national titles: the 1982 Torneo Nacional and the 1984 Torneo Nacional. It ranks 14th in the overall historical table and has played more than 4,000 official matches in all categories, counting league, cup and international cup competitions.
Besides football, the club has several teams in different sports, both team sports (such as volleyball, basketball, handball, field hockey and baseball) and individual ones (athletics, swimming, taekwondo and tennis).
In basketball (popularly known in Argentina as "basquet"), Ferro is also recognised as one of the most decorated institutions in the country. Nationally, it holds the honours of having been the first champion of the Liga Nacional de Básquet, the first to win two consecutive titles, and of totalling three Ligas Nacionales and one Campeonato Argentino. Internationally, it was the first Argentine club to be crowned South American champion and, together with Boca Juniors, is the most successful Argentine club in that competition with three titles. In addition, in 1986 Ferro was runner-up in the FIBA Intercontinental Cup.
In its other disciplines, it stood out mainly during the 1980s, when it won many honours in a wide variety of sports, such as volleyball and handball, a sport in which it was national champion in 2014, and it was crowned South American Champion on three occasions, in both the women's and men's branches. As for individual sports, Ferro Carril Oeste has supplied a large number of athletes to represent Argentina at the Olympic Games in various sports, athletics being the most notable.
