Club Gimnasia y Esgrima de Jujuy, known as Gimnasia y Esgrima de Jujuy or Gimnasia de Jujuy, is an Argentine football club located in Jujuy, specifically in the provincial capital, San Salvador de Jujuy. It currently plays in the Primera Nacional.
The club was founded by a group of people who were nicknamed "los turcos" ("the Turks"), and the club's inaugural day was 18 March 1931. Of this group, the most prominent was Tomás Yufra, who was the institution's first president. On that same day, the club adopted the white shirt with a light blue stripe. It plays its home matches at the Estadio 23 de Agosto, which bears this name in honour of that date, extremely important in the history of the Argentine Republic, the "Éxodo Jujeño". It was founded on 18 March 1973 and is located on the streets Avenida El Éxodo and Santa Bárbara (in the Barrio Luján), with a capacity for 25,000 spectators. Although the main sporting activity is football, other sports such as volleyball and rugby are also practised at the club, and since 2015 it has had a women's football team, which plays in the Liga Jujeña Femenina de Fútbol.
Its traditional rival is Altos Hornos Zapla, against whom it plays the "clásico jujeño". Talleres de Perico, Juventud Antoniana, Gimnasia y Tiro, Central Norte de Salta, Atlético Tucumán and San Martín de Tucumán are also historic rivals of the club, and the matches it plays against them are also considered derbies.
In 1970 it gained access to the Torneos Nacionales for the first time after winning the 1969 Torneo Regional, and played the Nacionales of 1970, 1973, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1980, 1981 and 1982. Its participation in 1975 stands out, when it finished fourth behind River Plate, Estudiantes and San Lorenzo, this being the best campaign by a Jujuy team in the Primera División. With 10 participations, it is the club with the most seasons played in the Primera División in the whole of northern Argentina since the restructuring of the AFA tournaments in 1986: 1994-95, 1995-96, 1996-97, 1997-98, 1998-99, 1999-00, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09.
In the Primera División, it is ranked 34th in the all-time table with 525 points from 143 wins, 145 draws and 228 defeats in 516 matches played. The club has the distinction of being, together with Gimnasia y Tiro, Atlético Tucumán, San Martín de Tucumán, Talleres and Central Córdoba (SdE), the only teams to have achieved two consecutive promotions to the B Nacional and to the Primera.
In the ranking published by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS), Gimnasia y Esgrima de Jujuy appears in 147th place; it was the first team from northern Argentina to be ranked, until the mark was surpassed by Atlético Tucumán thanks to its participation in international tournaments in the following decade.
