Club Atlético Estudiantes, also known as "Estudiantes de Buenos Aires" and "Estudiantes de Caseros", is an Argentine sports club whose main social and multi-sport headquarters, as well as its legal seat, are at Av. Francisco Beiró 5175 in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires; more precisely in the Villa Devoto neighbourhood. Its main football stadium is in Caseros, Tres de Febrero, in Greater Buenos Aires, and is 3 km from its nearest access to the Argentine capital. Its most important activity is football, and its team plays in the Primera Nacional (the second category of Argentine football), although other disciplines are also practised, such as acrobatics, aerobics, aikido, chess, boxing, classical dance, amateur football, women's football, children's football, futsal, artistic gymnastics, handball, karate, kobudo, swimming, figure skating, taekwondo, volleyball, yoga and zumba, among others.
It was founded on 15 August 1898 by students of the Mariano Moreno and Nacional Buenos Aires schools, hence its name, at the end of the 19th century in the City of Buenos Aires, its first ground being located on Avenida Blandengues (today Avenida del Libertador) and calle Oro, in the Palermo neighbourhood. Consequently, it was the first Argentine club called Estudiantes.
In the 1920s, Club Atlético Estudiantes moved to the site where Avenidas Figueroa Alcorta and Dorrego now intersect, and then in 1931 moved to Desaguadero and José P. Varela, in the Villa Devoto neighbourhood, where the club's main headquarters is located today. In 1963 it inaugurated its current football stadium in the town of Caseros.
It made its debut in the Primera División in 1904 and was a permanent presence in the first tournaments of Argentine football. It also won the 1910 Copa de Competencia Jockey Club, which was made official by the AFA in 2013, and finished runner-up in the Copa de Honor of 1906, 1909 and 1913, losing the finals to Alumni, San Isidro and Racing, respectively. During the amateur era, it also finished runner-up in the Primera División on two occasions, in the 1907 Championship and the 1914 Championship, repeating second place in the 1903 Copa Bullrich and the 1911 Copa de Competencia Jockey Club, being eliminated again by San Isidro. It also finished third in the 1905 Championship. Because of its brilliant results, it ranks sixth in the all-time amateur table, surpassed only by the big five of Argentine football.
The introduction of the professional system condemned it to lose ground. Nevertheless, during the 1970s it contended in several championships to return to the elite of Argentine football, until finally in 1977 it was promoted to the Primera División, playing the 1977 Nacional and the 1978 Metropolitano. In addition, in the 2012/13 Copa Argentina it had an outstanding run, being beaten by San Lorenzo on penalties in the semi-finals, a stage it reached again in the 2018-19 edition, this time being eliminated by River Plate, who went on to win it.
The club has a great friendship with Argentino de Rosario and Montevideo Wanderers Fútbol Club. Its historic rival is Almagro, with whom it plays the Clásico de Tres de Febrero.
Among the most outstanding players who have passed through the club are: Patrick McCarthy, Maximiliano Susán, Oscar Ivanissevich, Constantino Urbieta Sosa, José Navarro Cánovas, Juan Carlos Bravo, Jorge Trezeguet, Oscar Fabbiani, Luis Landaburu, Roberto Osvaldo Díaz, José María Baldovino, Alberto Pafundi, Juan Guillermo, Eduardo Cicarello, Marcelo Vázquez, Néstor Scotta, Héctor Scotta, Javier González, Javier Cordone, Fabio Schiavi, Mario Aguilar, Ricardo Pereyra, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Pablo Mouche and Juan Martín, among others.
