Defensa y Justicia

Club Social y Deportivo Defensa y Justicia, better known as Defensa y Justicia or simply Defensa, is an Argentine multi-sport institution whose headquarters are located in the city of Florencio Varela, in the southern part of Greater Buenos Aires. The institution was founded on 20 March 1935 and its main activity is football, although it also promotes the practice of other sports such as handball and hockey.

Defensa y Justicia has competed in the Argentine Primera División since the second half of 2014, after finishing as runner-up in the B Nacional in the 2013/14 season. In that championship, El Halcón ("The Falcon") had a very good campaign, collecting 75 points and thus earning promotion to the top division of Argentine football.

It plays its home matches at the Norberto Tomaghello stadium, which has a capacity of almost 20,000 spectators and is located in the locality of Gobernador Costa, in the partido of Florencio Varela.

It is one of the clubs that has played the most seasons in the Primera B Nacional, a total of 24. It has played in every division of Argentine football, being one of the few clubs that started in the lowest division and managed to reach the Primera.

After an excellent campaign in the 2016 Primera División Championship, under the leadership of Ariel Holan, finishing 8th out of 9 possible places in the overall table, Defensa y Justicia qualified for the first time in its history for an international tournament, in this case the 2017 Copa Sudamericana.

According to the FIFA world club ranking, Defensa ranked 17th in November 2018, thus reaching its best position in the table (last updated 19 November).

On 18 February 2019 it broke another record and climbed to 11th place in the ranking, placing it above the best teams in the world.

Over previous years and at present, Defensa y Justicia has been favourably recognised for its "lyrical and attacking" style of play, which it commonly displays on the pitch, earning praise and attention from the football world in general.

Argentine and international sports journalists have highlighted the football and institutional work of the Florencio Varela club in recent times.

Historically its classic rival is Club Atlético Claypole, whom it has not faced for a long time; today it also experiences matches against Quilmes and Temperley with great intensity.
