Unión de Santa Fe

Club Atlético Unión is a social and sports institution from the city of Santa Fe, Argentina, founded on 15 April 1907. Its main discipline is professional men's football, in which it currently competes in the Argentine Primera División.

Because of its physical location in the city, at the intersection of Bv. Pellegrini and Av. López y Planes, it is known as the "Club de la Avenida" ("Club of the Avenue"). The club's colours are red and white in vertical stripes.

In professional football, the club affiliated to the AFA in 1940 and in 1966 won promotion to the Primera División for the first time. It played there for several years, alternating with some spells in the second division.

In 1979 it achieved its best placing in the Primera, reaching the final of the 1979 Nacional against River Plate. The club did not win the title, as the results were 1-1 in Santa Fe and 0-0 in Buenos Aires, because the away goal counted double (in the event of a draw).

In the 2017-18 Argentine Primera División, after beating Independiente on the last matchday, the club qualified for the first time in its history for an international cup, the 2019 Copa Sudamericana. In the 2018-19 Primera División Championship it again qualified for the Copa Sudamericana, this time for the 2020 edition, with a 0-0 draw against Estudiantes de La Plata.

Throughout its history, players who became idols and made history with the Argentina national team have emerged from its youth academies. They are Leopoldo Luque and Nery Pumpido. Other idols of the institution are Francisco Valiente, Ángel Napoleoni, Antonio Simonsini, Federico Wilde, Alberto Galateo, Ricardo Altamirano, Alberto Acosta, Martín Perezlindo, Fernando Alí, José Luis Marzo, Mario Alberto, Víctor Bottaniz, Pablo de las Mercedes Cárdenas, Leonardo Madelón (who won promotion to the Primera División on two occasions, once as a player and once as a coach), Ramón Centurión, among many others.

Together with Colón it contests the Santa Fe derby, one of the most important in Argentina, since that city is one of the few where the local clubs surpass in popularity the two most important in Argentina, Boca Juniors and River Plate.

Other disciplines are also practised, such as basketball, archery, casín, volleyball, roller skating, futsal, women's football, karate, swimming in an Olympic-size pool, and artistic gymnastics. But after football, the most widely practised sport is basketball, whose team was champion of the Campeonato Argentino de Clubes in 1943 and 1969 and currently competes in the TNA of the Liga Nacional de Básquet. Carlos Delfino, an NBA player and Olympic champion with the Argentina national team at Athens 2004, began his career there.
