Palermo

Palermo Football Club is an Italian football club from Palermo, in Sicily, founded in 1900 and refounded several times. It currently plays in Serie B, the second division of Italian football.

In the 2020-21 season it played in Serie C after having been relegated for administrative problems in the 2018-19 season of Serie B; on 20 October 2019, Unione Sportiva Città di Palermo officially ceased to exist due to unpaid debts of more than 50 million euros. Created in 1900 as the Anglo-Palermitan Athletic and Foot-Ball Club, the club had several names before assuming its final form. In 2020 it won promotion to Serie C, the third division of national football.

Throughout its history, Palermo has played in all the professional categories of Italy, and spent several seasons in Serie A during the 1960s and early 1970s, also being a two-time Coppa Italia finalist during that period.

After its return to Serie A in 2004, the club became one of the most important in Italy, providing four players to the Italian national team that won the 2006 FIFA World Cup (Cristian Zaccardo, Fabio Grosso, Andrea Barzagli and Simone Barone). Following this promotion it took part in the UEFA Cup in several seasons. It had also come close to playing in the UEFA Champions League and reached the final of the Coppa Italia in 2011, which it lost to Inter Milan.

The official colours of the team are pink and black, giving rise to the nickname rosanero; another, less common nickname is aquile, in reference to the eagle on the club's official logo and on the coat of arms of the city of Palermo.

Palermo plays its home matches at the Stadio Renzo Barbera (formerly known as La Favorita), which has had a capacity of 36,365 people since 2007. It was originally built in 1932, but was renovated in the late 1980s and served as a venue for the 1990 FIFA World Cup.
