Associazione Calcio Milan S.p.A., also known as A.C. Milan or simply Milan, is an Italian football club that belongs to the city of Milan, in the region of Lombardy. Founded on 8 June 1899 by Alfred Edwards and Herbert Kilpin, among others, under the name Milan Foot-Ball & Cricket Club, it adopted its current name in 2003, which originated in 1945. It is considered one of the biggest clubs in the world.
It competes in the top category of Italian football, the Lega Nazionale Professionisti Serie A, the eponymous Serie A, since its establishment in 1929, with the exception of two periods in which it was relegated: the first in the 1979–80 season and the second in 1981–82, for a total of 84 seasons, making it the Italian team with the fourth most appearances. To these are added another 26 from earlier editions, for 110 seasons in the top category, making it the club with the second most participations. Its debut in the top category in the period before the single round-robin format dates back to 1900. In it, it has won 19 championship titles, or scudetti, as the third most decorated club. It completes its national records with five Coppa Italia titles and seven Supercoppa titles, which places it second in the country's all-time honours list, where it is affiliated to the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) (in Italian: Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio).
It was the first Italian team to win the European Cup (in 1962–63) and the second European team, and first Italian team, in number of European Cup/UEFA Champions League finals played, with 11 (tied with Bayern Munich). At the international level, it is the Italian team, and the third European and world team, with the greatest number of official international trophies, having won 20 titles, behind Real Madrid (32) and F.C. Barcelona. Of these, seven are from the European Cup/UEFA Champions League (the top club football competition in Europe), making it the second in number of trophies, behind Real Madrid (15); two from the defunct Cup Winners' Cup, five from the UEFA Super Cup and two from the defunct Latin Cup, in addition to four other intercontinental or world titles: three from the Intercontinental Cup and one from its successor, the FIFA Club World Cup.
It was also the first team to win the single-group Italian championship without suffering a defeat, in 1991–92, a feat matched by Juventus in the 2011–12 season, and it holds the absolute record for consecutive unbeaten matches (58) in the five major European championships (from 26 May 1991 to 14 March 1993). Numerous players have been awarded honours during their time at the club, such as the Ballon d'Or (8) and the FIFA World Player of the Year (3), both Italian records shared with Juventus.
Identified by its red-and-black shirt, from which it takes the nickname rossoneri, it plays its home matches at the Stadio Calcistico San Siro, where it has played since 1926, with a capacity of 80,018 spectators, making it the largest stadium in Italian football. It was renamed Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in the 1980s, and since 1947 it has shared it with its bitter historic rival, Football Club Internazionale, against whom it plays the “Derby della Madonnina”, one of the most closely followed derbies in football. It also has a rivalry with Juventus Football Club, against whom it plays the “Derby dei Campioni”.
The International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) has named it four times as the best team in the world of the month, a ranking compiled since 2000. Likewise, it has also named it the best team in the world of the year twice, since the record was established in 1991.
All these achievements place it as one of the most important and recognized football institutions in the world.
The club is one of the richest in Italian and world football. It was a founding member of the now-defunct G-14 group of the leading football clubs in Europe, as well as of its replacement, the European Club Association.
