Everton de Viña del Mar is a Chilean sports institution based in the city of Viña del Mar, in the Valparaíso Region. It currently plays in the Chilean Primera División. Since 1 July 2024, the club has been declared an Intangible Heritage of the City.
It was founded on 24 June 1909 in Valparaíso by a group of teenagers led by David Foxley. The origin of its name was taken in honor of Everton Football Club, based in Liverpool, following the tour that the British side made of Argentina in those years.
Throughout its history, the club has ventured into different sporting disciplines; nevertheless, its main activity at the professional level has been football since it joined the Chilean Primera División in 1944. With the transition from Corporación Deportiva to Sociedad Anónima, the club definitively abandoned the other sporting branches in order to dedicate itself exclusively to professional football.
It formally began its football activity in 1912, as part of the Valparaíso League of the Football Association of Chile (the name the Football Association of Chile acquired that same year); it took part in that association until 1943. However, it should be noted that over these years the club ceased its activities on two occasions. During this period it won the local championships of 1928 and 1931.
In 1944 Everton definitively joined the national tournaments of the Asociación Central de Fútbol (ANFP since 1987), where it is the team with the second-most national Primera División titles outside the city of Santiago with 4 titles, surpassed only by Cobreloa of the city of Calama.
With 4 national titles won in 1950, 1952, 1976 and 2008, 1 Copa Chile (1984) and 1 Primera B title (2003), it is one of the most decorated teams in the country. Its professional titles also include 1 Apertura Championship of the Segunda División (1982) and 1 tournament of the Viña del Mar Association (1944), the latter won under the name Everton Royal, the institution's alternate team.
From its amateur era, the winning of 2 tournaments of the Valparaíso League stands out. It should also be mentioned that the club is seventh in the all-time table of national football, being the best-placed provincial club.
It plays its home matches at the Estadio Sausalito, a World Cup venue, which has a capacity of 23,423 spectators. It is located in the Santa Inés neighborhood of Viña del Mar, a few meters from the modern downtown of the city and its shopping centers; in addition, its sports center (CDE) is located in Reñaca Alto. Its traditional rival is Santiago Wanderers, against whom it plays the "Clásico Porteño".
On 6 June 2016, the Mexican business conglomerate Grupo Pachuca confirmed the acquisition of 80% of the club's shares. In 2019, Grupo Pachuca confirmed the full acquisition of the club, making Everton de Viña del Mar part of the group.
From 2020, the club has a strategic alliance with Everton Football Club, a team that plays in the Premier League.
