The Club Cultural y Deportivo Jorge Wilstermann, better known as Jorge Wilstermann or simply Wilstermann, is a football club from the city of Cochabamba, Bolivia. It was founded on 24 November 1949 by a group of workers of the airline Lloyd Aéreo Boliviano and its name is a tribute to Jorge Wilstermann (1910–1936), considered the first Bolivian civilian pilot. It currently plays in the Primera División of Bolivia.
Institutionally, Club Wilstermann is the most important sports entity in Cochabamba. In sporting terms, it is the biggest and most successful club in the history of Cochabamba football and, likewise, owing to its history, honours and fan base, it is one of the great clubs of Bolivian football.
The colours that identify the club are red and blue, for the shirt and shorts respectively. The crest contains the "W" of Wilstermann, 5 stars reflecting the quality of the team, and 3 wings on each side referring to the club's aviator origins, which, together with the club's name, pay tribute to Bolivia's first commercial pilot, Jorge Wilstermann.
Nationally, Wilstermann has 15 national championships and 8 runner-up finishes in the Primera División of Bolivia since the start of professionalism in 1950, among which it holds the record of being the first and only Bolivian club to achieve a four-peat.
With 15 championships, it is the third team with the most national titles in the Primera División of Bolivia, behind Bolívar (30) and The Strongest (16).
It was the biggest winner of the Primera División of Bolivia from 1957 until 1984, being one of only two clubs to have held that distinction.
Internationally it has 25 appearances in Conmebol tournaments, having been part of the opening match of the first edition of the Copa Libertadores de América, against Peñarol of Uruguay; its best finish in it was reaching the semi-finals in the 1981 edition, and it was also the first Bolivian side to advance a round and reach that stage in the continental tournament. The 2017 edition is also notable, in which the Rojo reached the quarter-finals after getting through three rounds.
Its classic rival is Aurora, against whom it plays the Clásico Cochabambino. It also maintains traditional rivalries against Bolívar, San José, The Strongest, Blooming and Oriente Petrolero.
The club's financial situation is delicate: the financial report presented at the members' assembly of 24 April 2024 determined a debt of 3.8 million dollars, of which 620 thousand dollars correspond to national taxes and 2.6 million dollars to the past administrations of Grover Vargas and Gary Soria. It should be clarified that these administrations left the club plunged into crisis and with a debt of approximately 4 million dollars to players alone, which was partially covered to the extent of 1.4 million by the 2023 administration on an urgent basis and thanks to the goodwill of some players. Likewise, payments to the SIN were neglected, generating heavy fines, and alleged economic damage was determined in the administration of Grover Vargas amounting to 325 thousand dollars through arbitrary spending on the Proyecto Don Bosco Fátima.
For the 2024 administration the club has around 5,000 season-ticket-holding members with single contributions of between 200 $us and 93 $us. The record of season-ticket-holding members was reached in the 2023 administration, in the midst of the club's worst financial crisis, when 6,258 fans bought their season ticket, generating an income of 606 thousand dollars for the club.
