São Paulo Futebol Clube is a Brazilian multi-sport club located in the Morumbi district of the city of São Paulo, capital of the state of the same name. It was founded on 25 January 1930 and plays in the Campeonato Brasileño de Serie A.
In football, it is one of the most decorated clubs in Brazil, with two Copas Intercontinentales, one FIFA Club World Cup, three Copas Libertadores, two Recopas Sudamericanas, one Copa Sudamericana, one Copa Conmebol (the precursor tournament of the current Copa Sudamericana), six Campeonatos Brasileños, twenty-two Campeonatos Paulistas, one Copa de Brasil and one Supercopa de Brasil. In terms of international titles, São Paulo, with 12 achievements, is the Brazilian club and third club in South America with the most trophies, behind only Boca Juniors and Independiente and level with River Plate. With regard to the sum of official national and international titles of Brazilian clubs, in January 2024 São Paulo ranked as the third greatest champion of Brazil, with twenty victories.
On 7 December 2008 it won the Campeonato Brasileño de Serie A and became the first three-time consecutive champion and first six-time champion of this tournament. São Paulo is one of the two clubs in the country that were never relegated to the second division, the other being Flamengo (although it decided, together with Santos and Corinthians, not to take part in the 1979 edition because of the excessive number of teams).
The team's traditional home kit is a white shirt with two horizontal stripes (one red and one black), white shorts and white socks. Its stadium is the Morumbi football stadium in São Paulo, with a capacity of 72,039 seats, where it has played since 1960. The stadium hosted the finals of the Copa Libertadores in 1992, 1993, 1994, 2000, 2003, 2005 and 2006.
The association also has a tradition in sports other than football, such as athletics, in which its triple jump athlete, Adhemar Ferreira da Silva, was the country's first two-time Olympic champion (Helsinki Olympic Games in 1952, in which he broke the world record in the sport, and Melbourne Olympic Games in 1956). After Helsinki, Adhemar broke the world record in the sport for the second time, at the Pan American Games in Mexico in 1955. These records are represented by the two golden stars on the club's crest.
According to a survey conducted by the institute IBOPE, the club has the third largest fan base in the country, behind only Flamengo and Corinthians. In the state and city of São Paulo, the club has the second largest fan base.
According to studies by Brand Finance, São Paulo was the Brazilian club with the highest market value in 2015, at US$95 million (around R$296 million), ranking 43rd among the top 50 in the world. The company BDO Brasil indicated in 2018 that the club's brand was the fourth most valuable in Brazil, exceeding R$1.1 billion, behind Palmeiras (R$1.5 billion), Corinthians (R$1.5 billion, 1.7 billion) and Flamengo (with R$1.9 billion).
