Unión La Calera

Club de Deportes Unión La Calera is a football club from Chile from the city of La Calera, Valparaíso Region. Since the 2018 season it has played in the Primera División de Chile.

It was founded as "Club de Deportes La Calera" on 26 January 1954, after the merger of three teams from the city: "Cóndor", "Calera Comercio" and "Tifón". The following year this team joined with "Club de Deportes Melón", which had itself emerged from the merger of the clubs "Cemento Melón" and "Minas Navío", thus forming "Club Deportivo Unión La Calera".

After spending about five years in professional football, it obtained its first promotion to the Primera División in 1961, a category in which it remained until 1974. In 1985 it returned to the top division, but was relegated the following season because of a poor performance in an opening tournament (Copa Chile 1986), and could not play the main Primera División tournament that year. From then on it wandered through the Segunda and Tercera, until returning to the top category in 2011, and again in 2018, after a brief spell in the promotion division. Its honors list includes three Primera B titles and two Tercera titles.

The color that identifies the club is red, present in its kit since its formation as Unión La Calera, and it plays its home matches at the Estadio Municipal Nicolás Chahuán Nazar.

In the Campeonato Scotiabank 2018, Unión La Calera had one of the best campaigns in its history, in which it was even two points behind the leader Universidad Católica on matchday 21, with 42 points, two fewer than Católica, placing second and qualifying at that moment for the Copa Libertadores 2019. However, the Calera side suffered a decline, losing 8 matches in a row (matchday 22 to matchday 29), until on the last matchday it drew 1-1 away to Unión Española, which marked Unión La Calera's qualification for an international tournament for the first time in its history, the Copa Sudamericana 2019.

In 2020, the "cementero" side had the best campaign in its history in the Primera División, fighting matchday after matchday for the championship against Universidad Católica, the club that would ultimately be crowned champion. The runner-up finish was enough for it to qualify for the Copa Libertadores 2021 for the first time in its history.

In 2021, it finished 4th in the local tournament, which secured it a place in the preliminary phase of the Copa Sudamericana, where it made the best showing of its history in international cups, tying on points and goal difference in the group stage with Santos F.C., which advanced to the next round by one goal scored.

In 2022, Unión La Calera finished in 11th position; as a result, it could not qualify for the Copa Sudamericana 2023, and although it did not achieve its best campaign as in previous years, it was able to keep its place in the division, avoiding relegation to the Primera B for the fourth time.
