Grêmio Porto Alegre

El Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense, popularly known as Grêmio, is a football club from the city of Porto Alegre in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It was founded by German and English immigrants on 15 September 1903. It plays in the Campeonato Brasileño de Serie A. Its colors are blue, black and white.

Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense is one of the largest football clubs in Brazil, and one of the most traditional in Latin America.

Its historic classic rival is Internacional, against whom it plays the Grenal or Clásico Gaúcho, considered the greatest and most important sporting rivalry between football teams in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and one of the most important rivalries in Brazil.

Among the titles won by Grêmio, the most notable are one Copa Intercontinental, three Copas Libertadores de América, two Recopas Sudamericanas (in 1996 and 2018), two Campeonatos Brasileños, five Copas de Brasil and one Supercopa de Brasil. It was the first club outside the Southeast region to win titles of continental and world scope, being champion of the Americas and of the world in 1983. It also won one Copa Sur and one Campeonato Sur-Brasileño. At the state level, it has been champion forty-two times in the Campeonato Gaúcho, three times in the Recopa Gaúcha and once in the Copa FGF.

Its greatest sporting achievement came in 1983, when it was crowned world champion by defeating the European champion, Hamburg of Germany, at the Estadio Nacional de Tokio in the final of the Copa Intercontinental. Thanks to this important achievement, it belongs to the select group of only 30 teams in the world that have won the top club football championship at world level.

Grêmio is one of the most popular football clubs in Brazil, with an estimated following of more than eight million people in the country. According to a sample survey conducted by Datafolha in August 2019, 4% of the Brazilian population supports Grêmio, which has the fifth largest fan base in the country, tied with Vasco da Gama and Cruzeiro.

It plays its home matches at the Arena do Grêmio, opened in December 2012. Previously, the club used the Baixada stadium (from 1904 to 1954) and the Olímpico, opened in 1954 and renamed Olímpico Monumental in 1980.

It is currently ranked 16th in the world club ranking compiled by the Federación Internacional de Historia y Estadística de Fútbol (IFFHS), 3rd in the continental ranking of Conmebol and 3rd in the ranking of Brazil. In 2017 Forbes included it as the third most valuable football club in the Americas, with an estimated value of $295.5 million.
