Club Atlético Mitre is a sports club in the capital city of the province of Santiago del Estero, Argentina, founded on 2 April 1907. Its main activity is football. Since the 2017/2018 season it has played in the Primera Nacional, the second tier of Argentine football, for the first time in its history, and it currently competes there.
Its foundation marked a turning point in the sport of Santiago del Estero. The idea of this group of visionary enthusiasts gave birth to a club that, as the years went by, wrote pages of glory in its history, keeping the prestige of Santiago del Estero at the highest level with notable officials and top-class players who made their mark in Argentine football clubs and beyond its borders.
Its creation arose from a friendly match between the teams known as the Mendoza and Mitre streets. The former was led by Dr. José Francisco Luis Castiglione and the latter by Dr. Humberto Palumbo. The latter won, and in tribute to General Bartolomé Mitre it was given the name Club Atlético Mitre. It all began in the large house at calle Mitre 167. After Club Atlético Santiago disappeared through its merger with the club Unión, Mitre became the oldest institution. The colours chosen were yellow and black, in vertical stripes, in tribute to Peñarol.
Over the years it gained prestige and popularity inside and outside the province, making it a true footballing power of northern Argentina. These credentials allowed it to face the giants of Argentine and South American football (becoming the first team from Santiago del Estero to do so), most of the time in its own stadium and the rest as the visiting side, as in the case of River Plate (whom it faced 5 times throughout its history), Racing (3 times), Boca Juniors (2 times), Independiente (3 times, and with whom it inaugurated its floodlights, becoming the first club in the province with artificial lighting), San Lorenzo (only once), Rosario Central (4 times), Huracán (once), Talleres de Córdoba (7 times), Instituto (5 times), Gimnasia de Jujuy (4 times), Chacarita Juniors (2 times), Almagro (5 times), Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata (2 times), Estudiantes de La Plata (2 times), Banfield (only once), All Boys (3 times), San Martín de Tucumán (more than 12 times), Atlético Tucumán (more than 12 times), Central Norte (S) (more than 12 times), Juventud Antoniana (5 times), among other teams from the amateur era of football and in national AFA tournaments in the top division and in the lower divisions.
Other disciplines practised are basketball, pelota paleta, cycling, bocce and cestoball.
It is one of the few institutions in the country that managed to reach 100 years without ever having been relegated to lower divisions, either in its home league or at national level.
