Montpellier Hérault Sport Club, commonly known as Montpellier Hérault SC, is a French football club from the city of Montpellier in Hérault, Occitania. The club was founded through a merger in 1974 and since the 2025–26 season has played in Ligue 2, the second tier of national football.
The original club was founded in 1919 under the name Le Stade Olympique de Montpellier. It was later renamed Sports Olympique, becoming one of the most traditional clubs in French football.
After winning the Coupe de France in 1929, it took part in the first edition of the French championship alongside 19 other pioneering clubs of the competition. The club then alternated seasons between Division 1 and Division 2 for thirty-seven years before sinking at the beginning of the 1970s.
Since the 2009 season, when it won promotion to the top division, it has become a true protagonist of the league, going on to win it in the 2011–12 season for the first time in its history.
