Hamburger Sport-Verein e. V. (in Spanish, Club Deportivo Hamburgués), commonly known as Hamburgo or by its initials HSV, is a football club based in Hamburg, Germany. Since the 2025–26 season it has played in the 1. Bundesliga, after seven years of absence.
The current HSV was founded on 2 June 1919 following a merger of three clubs, and officially traces its origin to 29 September 1887, when the first of its predecessors, SC Germania, was founded, making it one of the oldest in the country. HSV holds the singular distinction of having played continuously in the top division of the German league system since the end of the First World War. Hamburg played in the Bundesliga from its founding in 1963 until its historic relegation in 2018, being the founding club of the German league that spent the most seasons in the top flight without being relegated, a record surpassed in 2021 by Bayern Munich.
The team is one of the most popular clubs in German football; it has won the national championship / Bundesliga six times, the DFB-Pokal three times and the DFL-Ligapokal twice. It also won two international titles, the 1976–77 European Cup Winners' Cup and the 1982–83 European Cup, for a total of thirteen titles. The most prominent player to have passed through the team and played for the German national team was Felix Magath.
The club's home kit consists of a white shirt, red shorts and blue and black socks. The team's most common nickname is "die Rothosen" (the Red Trousers). As it is one of the oldest clubs in Germany, it is also known as "der Dinosaurier" (the Dinosaur). Its main historic rivalry is with another historic German side, S. V. Werder Bremen, against whom it plays the "Nordderby" or Northern derby, and with F.C. St. Pauli, also based in Hamburg, against whom it plays the "Hamburg Stadtderby" or Hamburg derby. Its rivalry with Bayern Munich, the most successful team in the country, is also very famous.
