Werder Bremen (in German: Sportverein Werder Bremen von 1899 e. V., pronounced /ˈvɛʁdɐ ˈbʁeːmən/, Bremen for short) is a professional sports organisation from the city of Bremen, Germany. It was founded on 4 February 1899, and is one of the most decorated and historic German clubs in the country, known for its professional football section. It has 40,376 members. It plays its home matches at the Weserstadion, and wears a green shirt with white shorts and green socks. It competes in the 1. Bundesliga, the German first division.
Werder Bremen has won the Bundesliga four times (1964–65, 1987–88, 1992–93 and 2003–04), the German Cup in six editions (1960–61, 1990–91, 1993–94, 1998–99, 2003–04 and 2008–09), being the club that has won it the most times after Bayern Munich, the now-defunct German League Cup once, and the German Super Cup four times. The last title won was the German Super Cup in 2009, a title they contested after having won the German Cup earlier the same year. However, its greatest notable national success took place in 2004, when they achieved a historic double by being crowned champions of both League and Cup.
In Europe, they won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1992 and the Intertoto Cup in the 1997–98 edition. They played in the final of the 2008–09 UEFA Europa League, which they lost in extra time to Shakhtar Donetsk.
Werder Bremen's traditional rival is Hamburg, with whom it contests the North German derby. It also has a rivalry with Bayern Munich, the most successful team in the country.
Its all-time top scorer is the Peruvian footballer Claudio Pizarro with 153 goals.
