Club Santos Laguna S.A. de C.V., better known as Santos Laguna or simply Santos, is a professional football club based in Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico. It was officially registered on 4 September 1983 by the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social of the State of Durango under the name “Club Santos IMSS”. Its ownership lies with the joint-stock company Orlegi Deportes.
It has competed in the top category of the Liga Mexicana de Fútbol, the Primera División of Mexico, since the 1988–89 season, and is one of the seven teams in the current top division that have never been relegated.
It belongs to the Mexican Football Federation at national level, to the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football at continental level and to the International Federation of Association Football at world level. It is the third football club founded in the La Laguna metropolitan area and in Coahuila, after the extinction of the teams Club de Fútbol Laguna and Club de Fútbol Torreón.
From its foundation in 1983 its main home was the Estadio Corona until 2009, when it moved to the Nuevo Estadio Corona, which has a capacity of 30,000 spectators and is located within the Territorio Santos Modelo. From the beginning, the colours that have identified the club are green and white, taken from the defunct predecessor clubs C. F. Laguna and C. F. Torreón.
The first seasons in the top division were difficult for the club, which came close to relegation on more than one occasion. It was in the 1993–94 season that sporting success began and it reached the final, where it lost to Tecos de la UAG. The club has won eight official national titles: six league titles, one cup and one Campeón de Campeones. It won its first league title in 1996, and the following championships in 2001, 2008, 2012, 2015 and 2018, the cup championship in 2014 and the Campeón de Campeones in 2015. It is the fifth most successful team in the history of the league, together with Pachuca and Tigres. In international competitions it has only obtained two runners-up finishes in the CONCACAF Champions League.
According to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics, it is the fourth best club of the 21st century in the CONCACAF zone and the sixth best CONCACAF team of the first decade of the 21st century.
