El Club Social y Deportivo Colo-Colo is a sports institution based in the city of Santiago, Chile, whose main activity is professional football. It was founded on 19 April 1925 by a group of players from Club Social y Deportivo Magallanes, led by David Arellano, and has been run since 2005 by the corporation Blanco y Negro under a concession system.
The colors that identify it are white and black, which it has used in its kit since its foundation. As for its crest, it has featured the colors of the flag of Chile since its origins, and in 1950 it incorporated the figure of a Mapuche man as its main emblem. Since the death of Arellano in Spain in 1927, during an international tour of the club, the shirt has carried a crespón, a horizontal black band, which represents the eternal mourning of the institution for the loss of its founder.
It began its football activity in the year of its establishment as part of the Liga Metropolitana, in which it remained for two seasons. After the reunification of the governing federations of Chilean football in 1926, it joined the Liga Central de Football, renamed the Asociación de Football de Santiago in 1930. Since 1933, when together with eight teams it founded the then Liga Profesional de Football, it has taken part in the top category of Chilean football, and it is the only club that has played in every edition of the Primera División since its creation.
Nationally, with 33 Primera División titles, 14 Copa Chile titles and 3 Supercopa titles, it is the club with the most titles in the country. Internationally, in 1991 it became the first and only Chilean team to win the Copa Libertadores, and in 1992 it was proclaimed champion of the Recopa Sudamericana and the Copa Interamericana. It organized the Campeonato Sudamericano de Campeones in 1948, which inspired the founding of the UEFA Champions League in 1955 and of the Copa Libertadores itself in 1960. Its first team plays its home matches at the Estadio Monumental, located in the commune of Macul, in the southeastern sector of Santiago, which has a capacity of 43,667 spectators. Its traditional rival is Universidad de Chile, against whom it plays the so-called “clásico del fútbol chileno”.
Since 2007 it has had a women's football team, which plays in the Primera División de fútbol femenino de Chile, a tournament it has won 15 times. Internationally, it became the only Chilean club to win the Copa Libertadores Femenina, in 2012. In addition, the club takes part in youth tournaments with its youth categories, and has a large number of affiliates and sports schools spread across the country.
