Fluminense RJ

Fluminense Football Club, popularly known as Fluminense, is a multi-sport club based in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was founded on 21 July 1902 by Oscar Cox, a Brazilian of British descent. The founding act took place in the residential mansion of Horácio da Costa Santos, located on Rua Marquês de Abrantes, number 51. It competes in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. Its name comes from the Latin Flūmen, meaning River.

Established in what was then the aristocratic neighbourhood of Laranjeiras, Fluminense was forged by the sons of the Carioca elite who had come into contact with football during their studies in Europe. Indeed, Oscar Cox introduced football to Rio de Janeiro after finishing his studies at the La Ville school in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he played and learned to enjoy football. Its first official match was played against the now-defunct Rio FC and ended 8–0 to Fluminense. Its first footballing achievement came in 1906, when it won its first Campeonato Carioca, a regional championship of Brazil.

Fluminense competes in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, where it has won four titles: 1970, 1984, 2010 and 2012. It was also champion of the 2007 Copa do Brasil and of the 2016 Primeira Liga do Brasil. It is the second team with the most titles in the Campeonato Carioca, with 33, and in turn was the greatest champion of that competition from its creation in 1906 until 2009, thus completing a historic supremacy in that competition of 103 years as greatest champion until it was surpassed by Flamengo. It also won the Torneio Rio–São Paulo on two occasions, in 1957 and in 1960, the first time unbeaten.

At international level it won the 1952 Copa Rio Internacional, a former intercontinental championship organised by the CBD. Its best result in the Copa Libertadores de América was the championship in 2023, winning the final against Club Atlético Boca Juniors. Its best result in the Copa Sudamericana, meanwhile, was a runners-up finish in 2009, losing the final at the Maracanã stadium to Liga de Quito.

Fluminense is one of the “Big 4” of Rio de Janeiro, together with Flamengo, Botafogo and Vasco da Gama, who are its arch-rivals. It is regarded by the Brazilian media as one of the clubs of the select group known as “The Twelve Greats”. Fluminense's shirt is maroon, green and white in vertical stripes; for this reason it is nicknamed Tricolor. However, the first shirt used in 1902 was in two colours: white and grey in equal parts.

It originally played at its Estádio das Laranjeiras in the neighbourhood of the same name, where it was founded.

It currently plays its most important matches at the Estádio do Maracanã.
