Middlesbrough FC

Middlesbrough Football Club is a professional football club based in the English city of Middlesbrough that competes in the EFL Championship. It was part of the first edition of the Premier League in 1992.

Founded in 1876, it has played its home matches since August 1995 at the Riverside Stadium, with a capacity of 33,931 spectators, its third stadium since turning professional in 1889.

The club's main rivals are Newcastle United, Sunderland AFC and Leeds United AFC. Although its closest rivals are Hartlepool United and Darlington FC, these two clubs spent most of their histories in the third and fourth tiers, so matches against them are infrequent. However, on the rare occasions when the teams met, they were very intense, with violent clashes between supporters.

The club's best league position to date is third in the 1913–14 season. And it has spent only two seasons outside the top two divisions.

The club came close to disappearing in 1986 after going through severe financial difficulties. A board member saved the club and then led it. He is none other than the current chairman, Steve Gibson.

Boro won its first trophy after 128 years when it beat Bolton Wanderers in the final of the Football League Cup in 2004.

The club's traditional kit colour is red with white. It has also had several crests throughout its history, the most recent adopted in May 2007 and incorporating a lion.

In the 2015–16 season the historic English club returned to the Premier League after eight years in the Football League Championship under the Spanish manager Aitor Karanka.

On 23 June 2020 Neil Warnock replaced Jonathan Woodgate in charge of the team, owing to a poor run of results that was bringing them close to relegation.
