Universidad Católica (ECU)

Club Deportivo Universidad Católica, better known as Universidad Católica, is an Ecuadorian sports entity based in the city of Quito. It was founded on 15 May 1963 as a student sports team of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador. It currently takes part in men's and women's football: its men's squad plays in the Serie A, and its women's squad in the Súperliga Femenina.

The team has received curious nicknames throughout its history. Its first nickname, "Camaratta", arose because an Italian priest named Virgilio Camaratta was one of the forerunners of the squad. It was later given the nickname "Trencito Azul" ("Little Blue Train"), thanks to a fan who, in the club's first participation in the Copa Libertadores, ran a lap around the pitch carrying a blue locomotive. It is also known as "Chatoleí", a word derived from the cry of the players of Universidad Católica of Chile before a match.

As for sporting achievements, its greatest are the runner-up finishes in the Campeonato Ecuatoriano de Fútbol in 1973 and 1979. However, it has won several titles in the lower divisions. Its greatest rivalry is with Liga de Quito; as the two Quito teams that arose from universities, together they contest the Clásico Universitario.

The club plays its home matches at the Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa, where it shares the home ground with El Nacional, Cumbayá, Cuniburo, América and Deportivo Quito. The stadium, known as "El Coloso del Batán", has a capacity of 35,258 people and is owned by the Concentración Deportiva de Pichincha (operated under concession from the Municipality of the Metropolitan District of Quito). It is also where the Ecuador women's national football team usually plays its home matches. It does not have its own training centre, so it uses the Estadio La Armenia as such; this facility is located in the Los Chillos valley, near Quito.
