Its years in Peruvian professional football earned it the affection of the Sullana fans, making it the team with the greatest tradition and popular roots in the city, which is why it is considered a heritage of Sullana.
In the all-time table of Peruvian football it ranks 9th, after a solid run of 24 consecutive seasons in the first division. Its most successful season in history was the Campeonato Descentralizado 1988, where it finished 3rd in the overall table, but without international qualification because at that time only the top two went to the Copa Libertadores. However, its most remembered campaign was in the Campeonato Descentralizado 2003, when it achieved the runner-up spot in the Torneo Clausura and 5th in the overall table, placing in the international qualification positions. It qualified three times for the Copa Sudamericana, in the years 2004, 2005 and 2009.
The club's greatest rival is Jorge Chávez, and this traditional match is known as the Clásico del Chira. Other traditional rivals in the Piura region are Atlético Grau from the city of Piura, and Atlético Torino from the city of Talara. In 2018 and 2019 it played in Liga 2 after losing its place in the top category in 2017; however, on 27 December 2020, after beating Juan Aurich 2–1 in extra time in the decider for the Liga 2 title, it won the ticket to play in Liga 1 the following year, in the year of its centenary.
