Universitario de Deportes

Club Universitario de Deportes, popularly known as Universitario or the «U», is a sports institution located in the city of Lima, Peru, whose main activity is professional football; in addition to women's football, volleyball, basketball and other sports. It was founded on 7 August 1924, under the name «Federación Universitaria de Fútbol», by a group of young students of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. It currently plays in the Primera División of Peru, where it has competed since the third edition organised in 1928 by the Federación Peruana de Fútbol, thus becoming the oldest team to have remained uninterruptedly in the top category of Peruvian football. In addition, it is one of the twenty-four South American clubs that have never been relegated.

For its various sporting achievements, the club is considered one of the three big clubs of Peruvian football. To date, it is the team that has won the most national championships, with a total of twenty-seven league titles and one national cup. Its best international performances came between the late 1960s and the 1970s, when it was runner-up in the 1972 Copa Libertadores, this being the first team's best participation in an international tournament. It formerly played its matches at the Estadio Lolo Fernández, located in the district of Lima and named in honour of the footballer Teodoro Fernández, a tribute he received in his lifetime while still an active player.

Since 2000 it has played as the home side at the Estadio Monumental, which it owns. The venue has a capacity of 80,093 spectators, making it the second-largest football stadium in South America and one of the largest in the world. One of the main characteristics of the club is its multi-sport nature. In addition to its main football section, it has teams in other sports such as basketball, women's football, futsal, volleyball, among others. It also has an affiliate of the first football team, called Club Deportivo U América, which takes part in the Copa Perú.

With 48 international appearances in official tournaments organised by the Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol, it is, together with Sporting Cristal, the Peruvian side that has played the most continental cups. It is the second-best Peruvian team in the all-time table of the Copa Libertadores de América and is considered by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics as the best Peruvian team of the 20th century. In 2010, the Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol considered the «U» one of the teams with the greatest tradition in Conmebol, while FIFA named it one of the «classic clubs of the world». Its classic rivals are Alianza Lima, against whom it plays the Peruvian superclásico, and Sporting Cristal, the club against which it plays the so-called clásico moderno. It also maintains traditional rivalries with Deportivo Municipal and Sport Boys.
