Basel for short), also known by its initials FCB, is a professional sports organisation from the city of Basel, Switzerland. It was founded on 15 November 1893. It is one of the historic and most decorated teams in Swiss football with more than 33 national trophies, known for its professional football section, which competes in the Swiss Super League. It has played its home matches since 2001 at St. Jakob-Park, which has a capacity of 38,512 spectators, the largest in Switzerland.
Basel is one of the most successful clubs in Swiss football with more than 33 national trophies: 21 Swiss Super League titles and 12 Swiss Cups, surpassed only by Grasshopper, its greatest rival and the opponent in that country's classic. In addition to its current dominance —it has won eleven of the last fifteen leagues—, its first golden age was between the 1960s and 1970s, winning the Swiss league championship a total of seven times between 1967 and 1980. The 1980s were difficult times for Basel, absent from European competitions for years and relegated to the second division in 1987. In the 2000s Basel returned to the top of Swiss football, winning its first title after 22 years in 2002 and going on to win the title nine more times in the following thirteen seasons. The club has also won the Swiss Cup fourteen times.
FC Basel has had the highest attendance figures in Switzerland for 18 years, but has now been overtaken by Young Boys. FC Basel is the undisputed number 1 in the Basel region. Therefore, there are no derbies.
The club's youth academy is one of the most important in Swiss football and has produced players such as Adrian Knup, Alexander Frei, Marco Streller, Ivan Rakitić, Xherdan Shaqiri, Granit Xhaka, Breel Embolo and Yann Sommer.
