Newcastle United Football Club is a football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Founded on 9 December 1892 following the merger of two local teams, Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End, it is one of the teams with the greatest tradition and history in English football.

Known by its nicknames of the Magpies or the Geordies (the term for the natives of the area), it has played its home matches since its establishment at St James' Park (1880), the fourth-oldest stadium in the world after Bramall Lane, Sandygate Road and Stamford Bridge. It adopted its black-and-white colours in 1894, and has played in the top flight of English football, the Primera División of England, for a total of 90 seasons, 27 of them in the current Premier League, in which it has competed uninterruptedly since 2017.

As for sporting achievements, its greatest period of success was between 1904 and 1910, in which it won one Football Association Cup (F. A. Cup, or Cup Championship) and three league championships of the old Football League First Division. After that it established dominance in the Cup at the start of the 1950s, with three titles in five editions. After ups and downs it recovered former glories when, following the establishment of the Premier League, in which it made its debut a year after it was established, it began a run of good campaigns in which it achieved two runners-up finishes and two third places. Its last relegation occurred in the 2015–16 season, returning the following year as champion of the Second Division. In total it counts four Premier League championships, six FA Cups, one League Cup and one Community Shield (equivalent to a Supercup). At the international level, it won the Fairs Cup in 1969 and one UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2006, in addition to having taken part in the UEFA Champions League on three occasions.

It holds a long-standing rivalry with its neighbours Sunderland Association Football Club since they first met in 1883, and it is considered by FIFA to be one of the classic rivalries of football, in addition to being singled out as one of the most important confrontations in England and one of the oldest in the world. It is an enmity that carried over into football and that came from centuries earlier, with episodes in the Civil War, the Jacobite risings and the commercial rivalry during the Industrial Revolution. Both were the most decorated clubs in England at the beginning of the twentieth century.

In 2012, financially, it was the twentieth richest club in the world in terms of annual revenue, generating an estimated figure of 115 million euros. The club came to be fifth in this respect and the second club in England, behind only Manchester United Football Club, in 1999, a position that it nevertheless lost after the last leadership of the then owner Mike Ashley, until in 2021 the purchase of the club by Mohammed bin Salman and the Saudi sovereign wealth fund Public Investment Fund took effect, whereby it became the richest club in the world, surpassing, and by a wide margin, the also multimillionaire Arab-owned teams Paris Saint-Germain Football Club (Qatari-owned) and Manchester City Football Club (Emirati-owned).
