Club Deportivo Guadalajara S.A. de C.V., colloquially known as “Chivas Rayadas”, “Chivas Rayadas del Guadalajara”, or “Chivas”, is a professional football club based in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. It was officially founded on 8 May 1906 by the Belgian merchant and sales agent Edgar Everaert, under the name Unión Football Club, the same year in which it began its football activity.
In 1908 it began its participation in the Liga de Occidente, a tournament in which it won thirteen titles, becoming the most decorated team in the history of the competition. In 1943 it joined the then Liga Mayor, in which it won its first title on 3 January 1957.
It plays in the top category of Mexican professional football, the Primera División de México, since its founding in 1943, being, together with Club América, one of the only two teams that have managed to play in all the tournaments of that competition. It ranks second in the ranking of league titles won with a total of 12. Likewise, it holds second position in the list of clubs with the most national titles in Mexico with a total of 24 (twelve league titles, four Copa México, seven Campeón de Campeones and one Supercopa de México). It ranks second in the all-time table of the Primera División. Internationally, it won the CONCACAF Champions' Cup in 1962 and 2018 and also finished runner-up twice, while it was runner-up in the Copa Libertadores in its 2010 edition.
Together with Club América it takes part in the Clásico of Mexican football, also known as “El clásico de clásicos” or the “clásico nacional”, which is played between the most popular and successful clubs in the history of Mexican football. It also plays the Clásico Tapatío (the oldest in Mexico) against Atlas, another of its great rivals.
The most representative characteristic that historically distinguishes Club Deportivo Guadalajara from the rest of the clubs in Mexico is its policy of fielding only players who are Mexican by birth or of Mexican origin. It is also historically recognized as a club that works on the development of young footballers, which supplies mainly most of the squad of the first team and the various categories of the Mexico national team. This policy and tradition does not apply to coaches, who can be foreigners. Its owner is the Mexican businessman Amaury Vergara.
It belongs to the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) at the national level, and is governed by the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) and by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) at the international level. Likewise, it ranks 110th in the all-time world club ranking according to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS), being the second best-placed Mexican team on the list.
The colors that identify the club are red, white (from which it takes the nickname “rojiblancos”) and, to a lesser extent, blue; this range can be seen both in the kit and in the crest of the institution, both designed in 1908. The official motto of the institution is “Fraternidad, Unión y Deporte” (“Fraternity, Union and Sport”).
The club's headquarters are located on Calle Madero number 500 in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco, in western Mexico; they were previously located at Colomos number 2339 in the Providencia neighborhood for more than 60 years. The Estadio Jalisco was the venue for the team's home matches from 1960 to 2010. In 2010 the club moved its home ground to the Estadio Akron, a facility with a capacity for 49,850 spectators.
