Club Universidad Nacional, A.C., popularly known as the Pumas de la UNAM or simply Pumas, is a professional football team in the Primera División of Mexico, founded on 2 August 1954. It is owned by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México itself, as stated in its articles of incorporation, but since 1977 it has been the board of trustees that administers and finances the club so as not to create a burden for the university itself. This board of trustees is a civil association made up of prominent university members and businesspeople, in which the rector of the UNAM serves as honorary president.

The election of the club's president is decided by the board of trustees through the club's assembly of members. It plays its home matches at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario in Mexico City and its traditional colours are blue and gold.

The team has won seven league championships, which places it seventh in history. It has won three CONCACAF Champions Cups, making it the fifth Mexican team to have won it the most times, behind América, Cruz Azul, Pachuca and Monterrey. In addition, its honours include one Copa México, two Campeón de Campeones titles, one Copa Interamericana and one runners-up finish in the Copa Sudamericana.

It was the third most popular team in Mexico behind Club América and Club Deportivo Guadalajara, according to surveys carried out by Grupo Reforma and Consulta Mitofsky from 2013 to 2017; however, according to the same polling sources, it fell to fourth and fifth place in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

It is one of the four clubs that remain in the top flight since their first promotion (the others are Toluca, Cruz Azul and Tijuana). It therefore has a record of 90 consecutive seasons in the top division, since its promotion in 1962.

One of the elements that distinguishes the club is its system for developing professional footballers, the so-called “cantera” (youth academy); over the years this has allowed the institution to be the cradle of outstanding Mexican players, among whom the following stand out: Enrique Borja, Aarón Padilla, Olaf Heredia, Adolfo Ríos, Leonardo Cuéllar, Luis Flores, Manuel Negrete, Miguel España, Alberto García-Aspe, Luis García Postigo, Jorge Campos, Claudio Suárez, Sergio Bernal, Braulio Luna, Israel López, Gerardo Torrado, Israel Castro, Efraín Juárez, Héctor Moreno, Pablo Barrera, Johan Vásquez and the man regarded as the greatest Mexican player of all time: the five-time top scorer and member of Real Madrid's all-time best XI, Hugo Sánchez.

Universidad has historically been recognised as one of the best youth academies in Mexican football, and likewise its youth teams have taken part in international tournaments in different parts of the world.

The UNAM side is one of the teams that has not only supplied or sold the most players to other clubs in Mexico, but is also the Mexican club that has exported the most home-grown players to leagues abroad, such as: Hugo Sánchez, Luis García Postigo, Manuel Negrete, Luis Flores, Gerardo Torrado, Héctor Moreno, Efraín Juárez, Pablo Barrera and Johan Vásquez; likewise, its youth teams have contributed players to the various Mexican national teams.

Likewise, coaches of Puma origin have gone on to manage the Mexican national team: Bora Milutinovic, Mario Velarde, Miguel Mejía Barón and Hugo Sánchez with the senior national team; Jesús Ramírez with the under-17 national team (which won the World Championship in Peru in 2005) and Leonardo Cuéllar with the women's national team.
