Real Sociedad

Real Sociedad de Fútbol, S.A.D., better known as Real Sociedad or simply La Real, is a Spanish football club based in San Sebastián (Gipuzkoa). It was founded on 7 September 1909, although its origins date back to 1904 with the former society Donostiarra Recreation Club, several members of which went on in 1907 to form San Sebastián Foot-Ball Club, which later led to the founding of the club under the name Sociedad de Foot-Ball de San Sebastián.

Identified by its blue-and-white colours, from which it takes the nickname txuri-urdin, it is one of the nine clubs that have been crowned champions of the Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Primera División, with two consecutive titles in the 1980-81 and 1981-82 seasons, as well as three runner-up finishes.

At present, it occupies eighth place in the all-time table. In the country's second national competition, the Campeonato de Copa, it has won four titles, the first as Club Ciclista de San Sebastián in 1909, the second in 1987, the third in 2020 and the fourth in 2026, and it was a finalist in four more editions. The first of those Cup titles allowed it to be one of the teams that made up the first edition, in 1929, of the current top category of the Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional, the Primera División, which it has played uninterruptedly since 2010, with a total of 80 appearances.

It completes its honours with a Supercopa in 1982, its first edition, and, at the continental level, it has played fifteen editions of the UEFA Europa League (formerly the UEFA Cup), one of the European Cup Winners' Cup and five of the Champions League, the top club competition on the Old Continent.

It plays its home matches at the Anoeta stadium, with a capacity of 40,000 spectators. It has more than 37,000 season-ticket holders and is, according to surveys by the Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas (CIS), the seventh club with the most supporters in Spain. FIFA names it as one of the country's "classic clubs".

The club maintains a historic rivalry with Athletic Club, against whom it plays the "Basque derby", one of the most traditional fixtures in Spain.

It is also the sixth team that has contributed the most internationals to the Spanish national football team.
