Plymouth Argyle

Plymouth Argyle Football Club is a football club from England, from the city of Plymouth in Devon. It was founded in 1886 and since the 2025-26 season has played in the English Football League One, the third tier of English football.

Since becoming professional in 1903, the club has won five Football League titles (one in Division Two and two in Division Three), five Southern Football League titles and one Western Football League title. The 2009-10 season was the club's 42nd in the second tier of English football. The team set the record for the most championships won in the third tier, having finished first in the Third Division South twice, once in the Third Division and twice in the Second Division.

The club owes its nickname, The Pilgrims ("Los Peregrinos"), to an English religious group that left Plymouth bound for the New World in 1620. The club's crest features the Mayflower, the ship that carried the pilgrims to Massachusetts. The city of Plymouth is the largest in England never to have played in the top division. In turn, Plymouth Argyle is the southernmost and westernmost Football League club in England.

After 13 years competing between League One and League Two, on 29 April 2023 Plymouth achieved promotion to the Championship after beating Burton Albion 1-0.

On 9 February 2025 it achieved the historic feat of eliminating Liverpool FC at their own stadium, while bottom of the English second tier and with its opponent being the leader of the Premier League.
