Portland Timbers

Portland Timbers is a football club from the United States based in Portland, Oregon, founded on 20 March 2009 when Major League Soccer, the country's top category of the sport, granted the city an expansion place to take part in the competition from the 2011 season in the Western Conference.

Although the club was founded in 2009, it owes its name and origins to the franchise of the same name that was created in 1975 as an expansion team of the North American Soccer League. At the time of obtaining the franchise, the club was playing in the USL First Division, the second tier of American soccer at that time.

It plays at Providence Park, home of the franchise since its origins, which has a capacity of 25,218 spectators, all of them seated. The stadium, opened in 1926, was last remodeled after the franchise was approved for Portland, in order to meet MLS requirements.

Its main rivalry is with the Seattle Sounders, with whom it contests the Cascadia Derby. The confrontation between the two clubs dates back to the time when the two teams competed in the North American Soccer League. Another classic Timbers rivalry is with the Canadian team Vancouver Whitecaps, also from the Cascadia region, whom it has faced since both clubs coincided in the A-League, later renamed the USL First Division. The 3 clubs compete in MLS as well as in the Cascadia Cup, an annual tournament created in 2004, in which the team that accumulates the most points in matches among them during the regular season is crowned champion. Since 2011, the year in which the franchise joined Major League Soccer, the Timbers have been crowned champions of this competition in 2012.

After beginning to compete in MLS in 2011, the Timbers won their first title in 2013 when they won the Western Conference regular season. They also became the first Major League Soccer champion from the Cascadia region when they won the 2015 MLS Cup. In the final, played on 6 December, they beat the Columbus Crew 2-1 at Mapfre Stadium in the city of Columbus, with goals from Diego Valeri and Rodney Wallace.
