The name of the team alludes to that of one of its most important founders, Ricardo Saprissa. It is the team with the largest following and popularity in the country.

In 2005 it achieved a historic institutional feat by finishing third in the FIFA Club World Cup, held in Japan. Its sporting merits led the club to be chosen as the Concacaf Team of the 20th Century by the IFFHS.

Its traditional rivals are Liga Deportiva Alajuelense, with whom it plays the Clásico Nacional, Club Sport Herediano, with whom it plays the Clásico del Buen Fútbol, and Club Sport Cartaginés.
