Neuchâtel Xamax FCS

Neuchâtel Xamax Football Club Serrières (in Spanish: Xamax Fútbol Club de Serrières-Neuchâtel) is a Swiss football club from the city of Neuchâtel. It was founded in 1970 and played in the Swiss Super League until the 2011-12 season, in which, owing to financial problems, it was relegated to the 2. Liga, the fifth tier of Swiss football; however, three years later it returned to the second division.

The club was founded in 1970 through the merger of FC Xamax (founded in 1912) and FC Cantonal Neuchâtel (founded in 1906). In 1973 it was promoted to the Swiss top flight for the first time. In the 1973/74 season it reached the final of the Swiss Cup, being defeated 3-2 by FC Sion.

In the 1980/81 season, after finishing third, it qualified for European competitions for the first time, reaching the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup the following year.

In 1985 it again lost in the cup final, this time to FC Aarau. The following season, it again reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup, and was also league runner-up. The following season it won its first league title, which it retained the year after. These are the only two official titles in its honours list, although in the 1990 season it was runner-up in both league and cup.

In 2003 it played its fourth cup final, again unsuccessfully, being defeated 6-0 by FC Basel. The following season, 2003/04, it managed to keep its place in the division after beating FC Vaduz in a hard-fought relegation play-off. However, two years later it again took part in the play-off, being beaten by FC Sion, which meant the first relegation in its history to the second division. A year later, it regained its place in the top flight.
