Real Unión Club

Real Unión Club is a Spanish football club from the city of Irún, Gipuzkoa, which plays in the Primera Federación, the third tier of the national football system. It was founded in 1915. Earlier, in 1902, the first football team in Irún, a sport of British origin, was founded under the name “Irún Football Club”, and in 1906 the “Irún Sporting Club” followed, which suffered a split in 1908 from which the “Racing Club de Irún” emerged. The division lasted barely seven years, until in 1915 the differences were settled and reunification was reached, the name “Unión Club” being adopted as a result of this merger, with the title “Real” granted by Alfonso XIII. Its first team plays its home matches at the Stadium Gal, which has a capacity of 6,344 spectators.

Real Unión is a historic club; it was one of the ten founding clubs of the Campeonato Nacional de Liga in 1929 and has won four Copa del Rey titles. Despite this, it has played only four seasons in the top flight. Its golden age lasted until the early 1930s, when professionalism entered the world of football and the clubs of the provincial capitals, such as Real Sociedad in Gipuzkoa, came to dominate the rest.

The club's crest has changed very little since its foundation and consists of a circle containing the initials “U”, “C” and “I”, with the royal crown at the top, while the club's traditional kit is a white shirt with black shorts and socks. It is worth noting that the first goal of the first international match in the history of the Spanish national team, played at the Olympic Games in Antwerp, was scored on 28 August 1920 against Denmark by the Irún player Patricio Arabolaza.
