Sport Club Internacional, popularly known as Internacional, Inter de Porto Alegre or simply Inter, is a multi-sport club from the city of Porto Alegre, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It was founded on 4 April 1909 by Henrique Poppe Leão. It currently competes in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. Its colors are red and white and its fans are known as Los Colorados (“The Reds”).
Internationally, it is one of the most successful clubs in Brazil, being the third most decorated Brazilian team at the international level, with 7 official international titles, behind only Santos and São Paulo. Among its greatest international achievements are the conquest of the FIFA Club World Cup in 2006, 2 Copa Libertadores titles won in 2006 and 2010, one Copa Sudamericana won unbeaten (2008), 2 Recopa Sudamericana titles (2007 and 2011) and one Suruga Bank Championship (2009).
Nationally, Inter is a three-time Brasileirão champion and is the only Brazilian club to have been crowned national champion without losing any match in the modern era of the Brasileirão after 1971 (unbeaten in 1979). It also won one Copa do Brasil, one Copa Heleno Nunes and 45 Campeonato Gaúcho titles, a competition of which it is the record winner and the only octa-champion.
It also holds, along with Independiente and River Plate, the record for having won all four current Conmebol tournaments (Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana, Recopa Sudamericana and Suruga Bank Championship). Meanwhile, together with Sport Club Corinthians Paulista, they are the only teams in the Americas to win the triple crown (Club World Cup, Recopa Sudamericana and Copa Libertadores in the same year).
Internacional is one of the most popular clubs in Brazilian football, with an estimated fan base of 6.3 million supporters spread across Brazil. It is the pioneer club in Brazil in the socio-torcedor (member-supporter) program launched in 2003, managing to match its finances with those of the teams of the Rio–São Paulo axis. It has the largest number of members in Brazil, with more than 75,000 active members. Since 1969, it has played its football matches at the Beira-Rio stadium, which has a leaf-shaped roof and a facade renovated in accordance with the club's colors; it is one of the most modern stadiums in South America, hosted 5 matches of the 2014 World Cup and has a capacity for more than 50,000 supporters.
Its historic rival is Grêmio, against whom it plays the Grenal or Clásico Gaúcho, considered the most important sporting rivalry between football teams in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and one of the most important rivalries in Brazil. Together with the latter, they are the only Porto Alegre teams that belong to the select group of the only 31 teams in the world that have won the top football club championship at world level, when on 17 December 2006 it was crowned champion of the FIFA Club World Cup held in Japan, defeating F.C. Barcelona of Spain 1–0 at the Yokohama International Stadium.
In addition to men's football, Internacional maintains or has maintained other team and individual sports, such as women's football, athletics, esports, basketball, boxing, taekwondo, volleyball and futsal. In the latter it won the Liga de Futsal in 1996, the Copa Libertadores de Futsal in 2000, the Intercontinental Futsal Cup in 1996 and eight state titles. In women's football, it is the biggest winner of the Campeonato Gaúcho, with ten titles, the most recent in 2020.
