Derby County Football Club is an English football club based in Derby that plays in the Football League Championship—the second tier of English football—as of the 2024–25 season. It was founded on February 5, 1884.

Derby was one of the twelve founding members of the Football League and is one of only ten clubs to have competed in every season of the English Football League.[1] The club has primarily competed in the top two divisions of the football pyramid, although it has spent three separate two-year spells in the third tier (1955–57, 1984–86, and 2022–24).

The club's longest continuous spell in the top flight lasted 27 years, between 1926 and 1953. However, it should be noted that the club competed in the First Division for only 21 consecutive seasons during that period, as competitive football was suspended between 1940 and 1946 due to the outbreak of World War II.

The club is currently experiencing its longest period outside the top flight; it will compete in the second division during the 2024–25 season, marking its seventeenth consecutive season without top-flight football since 2007–08. This surpasses the previous record of 16 consecutive seasons set between 1953–54 and 1968–69.
